For most Christians, the Holy Spirit is the third prosopon of the Holy Trinity – together with God the Father and God the Son – and He is the omnipotent God. He is seen by this majority as one of the people of the Triune God who revealed his holy name YHWH to his people in Israel, sent his eternally begotten Son Jesus to save them from divine fury and sent the Holy Spirit to sanctify and give life to his Church. The Triune God manifests itself as three “people” (Greek koiné: hypostasis) of a single divine substance (ancient Greek: ousia), called God.
Jesus is presented in the Gospels as the long-prophesied Messiah, who baptizes not with water, but as the “Holy Ghost” and with fire (Luke 3:16). Before the Passion, during the Last Supper, He promises to send from the Father another Paraclete into the world, the Holy Spirit, the “Spirit of Truth” (John 15:26), which, according to the Acts of the Apostles, appeared in the form of “tongues of fire “over the disciples, the apostles, during the event known as Pentecost, which marks the beginning of Jesus’ Church on earth (Acts 2: 1).
The understanding of the mystery of the Holy Trinity varies in the various Christian denominations. Some call themselves trinitarian because they share the majority point of view above, while the non-Trinitarians have a different understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit. Even among the Trinitarians, there are differences: while the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Orthodox Church claim that the Spirit proceeds only from the Father (“through the Son”), the Catholic Church maintains that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son, a doctrine that became known as Filioque and was once the subject of great controversy.
